What Are HS Codes?

The Harmonized Commodity Description and Coding System, commonly referred to as HS Codes, HTS Codes, or Tariff Numbers, is a standardized code system developed and maintained by the World Customs Organization (WCO). Ranging from 6 to 14 digits, HS Codes are used by customs authorities to classify products and calculate the applicable duties.

Structure of an HS Code

• Chapter: The first two digits indicate the product category.

• Heading: The next two digits specify a more detailed category within the chapter.

• Subheading: The following two digits further refine the product classification.

Example:
6103.10

• 61: Articles of apparel and clothing accessories, knitted or crocheted

• 6103: Men's or boys' suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, trousers, bib and brace overalls, breeches, and shorts (excluding tracksuits, ski suits, and swimwear)

• 6103.10: Men's or boys' suits of textile materials, knitted or crocheted (excluding tracksuits, ski suits, and swimwear)

Adding more digits increases the specificity of the classification.

2. Refer to the customs website of the destination country, such as:

   • United States: https://hts.usitc.gov/

3. Use online HS Code lookup tools like Zonos Classify for automated classification.

Example:
If you’re shipping a “Women’s Blouse made of 100% Cotton, knitted or crocheted” to the United States:

• Heading: Articles of Apparel and Clothing Accessories, Knitted or Crocheted (61)

• Subheading: Women's or girls' suits, ensembles, jackets, blazers, dresses, skirts, trousers, and shorts (11)

• Material: Of Cotton (22)

• Type: Blouses, shirts, and tops (60)

Resulting HS/HTS Code: 6104.22.0060

With this code, customs authorities can accurately identify the contents of your package without needing a physical inspection, reducing delays in the clearance process.
