What is Volumetric Weight and Why Does It Matter?
Volumetric weight (sometimes called dimensional weight) is how we determine shipping costs based on package size rather than just weight. Think of it this way: a large box of feathers takes up as much space in a delivery truck as a small box of books, even though it weighs much less. That's why we need to consider both size and weight when calculating shipping costs.
How Do We Calculate Your Package's Volumetric Weight?
The calculation is straightforward: (Length × Width × Height) ÷ 5000 = Volumetric Weight in kg
Let's break this down:
Measure your package in centimeters
Multiply the length, width, and height together
Divide by 5000 (our standard conversion factor)
Quick Example:
If your package is 30cm × 20cm × 10cm: (30 × 20 × 10) ÷ 5000 = 1.2 kg volumetric weight
Tips for Accurate Measurements
Getting the Right Numbers
Measure at the longest points of your package
Round up to the nearest centimeter
Include any bulging or protruding parts
Handling Special Cases
For oddly-shaped items: Measure as if fitting into a rectangular box
If your package bulges: Include the bulge in your measurements
When in doubt: Measure slightly larger rather than smaller
Pro Tips for Efficient Shipping
Choose appropriately sized boxes to avoid paying for unused space
Consider repackaging bulky items in more compact ways when possible
Remember: You'll be charged based on either the actual weight or volumetric weight – whichever is higher
Understanding Your Final Cost
At Wingbox, we use whichever is greater: the actual weight or the volumetric weight. This ensures fair pricing for both light-but-large and small-but-heavy packages.
